Mills Act Home meets modern living
How do you honor an architectural landmark home while adapting it’s spaces to more modern living? Very carefully. What we need from our homes these days doesn’t necessarily reflect what was needed when our homes were built in the past with their emphasis on formal entertaining and living.+
Homeowner needs and lifestyle changes require a new approach and for spaces to adapt. Blending old with new is a special thrill for our La Cañada studio, and this home's curated, layered look was the result of that design intent.

A blend of textured rugs, bone inlay side tables, asian ceramics, antique wood pieces, and custom, upholstered seating create a layered, curated look.
A TV over the mantle is hidden by a well concealed piece of art that rolls away with the push of a button.
In one corner of the room sat a piano rarely played but whose corner position promised to be more frequently used by another piece of furniture, a custom bar. As it was installed during Covid, I think we can all appreciate that particular choice.
Once a bedroom, this room now serves as the family’s gathering place upstairs close to bedrooms and home offices. That burled wood waterfall table over the custom ottoman? We added castors to its base so it can be pulled close to the sofa when an extra place for work or a drink is needed.
It was a dressing room before it became a home office; it was a pass-through before it became a quiet place to work.
